A shocking incident in Meerut has highlighted the growing menace of online fraud and theft. A local resident lost his motorcycle to a man who posed as a genuine buyer but fled with the vehicle during a test drive.
The victim, who had listed his motorcycle for sale online, was approached by a man in his late 20s who showed keen interest in purchasing the bike. The meeting took place at a pre-decided location, where the alleged buyer appeared polite, asked relevant questions, and seemed knowledgeable about motorcycles—earning the seller’s trust.
However, things took a drastic turn when the man requested a short test ride to evaluate the bike. The unsuspecting owner handed over the keys, only to realize moments later that the supposed buyer had no intention of returning. The thief vanished into the city streets, leaving the owner shocked and stranded.
“He seemed so genuine. He asked about the bike’s history and mileage, and I had no reason to doubt him,” the victim told local reporters.
Police Investigation Underway
The Meerut Police were immediately alerted and have begun investigating the case. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scanned to trace the thief’s route. Authorities have also issued an advisory urging people to be extra cautious when dealing with potential buyers through online marketplaces.
A police spokesperson said:
“This is a classic modus operandi used by criminals. Sellers should always verify identity documents of buyers. If a test drive is requested, it’s important to accompany the person or take collateral such as ID proof or valuables to ensure they return.”
Growing Threat of Online Market Frauds
Incidents like these underscore the risks associated with private sales facilitated through online ads. While digital platforms provide convenience and reach, they also give criminals opportunities to exploit unsuspecting individuals.
For now, the victim is left devastated, having lost both his motorcycle and trust in potential buyers. Meanwhile, the search continues for the conman who managed to slip away with the bike.
